Since I had to upload some files onto one of my Dropbox accounts for work, I had to delete a few Photoshop files of my artwork from last year (2017). I will attempt to reupload the Photoshop files at a later date when I have the means to hold those files without worrying about data space, but until then some files on Patreon will be unavailable.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

IMPORTANT: Please do not harass anyone in the Reddit thread. The purpose of this is to grow from it and not to bring other people down, no matter what they might’ve said.

So someone posted my Death Stranding Illustrated Theories on to Reddit (here’s the Reddit link). I’m not super surprised by this, in fact I had a feeling that this would probably happen at some point. But I thought this would be a good time to talk about something.

Whenever you post anything on the internet, especially if it’s creative content, you’re bound to receive negative responses. Depending on the nature and quality of your work the amount of negativity may vary, with some being constructive criticism and others just being rude for rudeness sake, but it will happen and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Using the comments from the Reddit link as an example, there were some nice ones like this:

...And some not-so-nice ones like this:

6560437_151595957172_tumblr_inline_p2k8fdA8ma1uufcsx_540.png

Despite having a mix of good and bad responses, it would be easy to just focus on the negative ones and have it bring you down or discourage you from creating anything in the future. But you can’t let those negative comments stop you from making things. Ignore them, or better yet, use them to push you into doing better in the future.

I personally am not bothered by the “bad art” comment because those series of drawings weren’t my best work. I can draw better than that. For example:

6560437_151595957012_tumblr_inline_p2k8mp7sG91uufcsx_540.png

I mean yeah, I would’ve preferred someone not call my art bad, but like I said before, that’s just a part of posting things on the internet. If comments like that were enough to stop me, I would’ve stopped drawing a long time ago.

It’s okay to be upset when people are needlessly rude to you or your work, but don’t let that control you. Even if you’re not a good artist now, you will improve with time and effort if you stay determined. But you’ll never get better if you become too discouraged to continue making things. Don’t give up!

My last post

Update: Good news and bad news!

The good news is my redemption code works after all, and I’ll be able to have Photoshop free for a whole year! Which is super awesome because I was 100% prepared to not have Photoshop anymore, because no I can not afford to spend $20 a month on Photoshop.

The bad news is the redemption code only lasts one year. This isn’t actually a bad thing in the short term, since I’ll have 365 days worth of free Photoshop and I’m super grateful for that. But if my financial situation doesn’t improve by December 5 of next year, then I won’t have Photoshop anymore unless I pay for it.

Honestly, this little scare has given me the motivation to work as hard as I can, since I know things will only get more difficult for me if I slack off. I just have to keep doing my best to improve until I’m either a) good enough to get a professional art job or b) have enough people following me on Patreon so I can have that as my full time job.

Here's a quick summary of what's going on if you don't have time to read my post in it's entirety

  • I use to have free Photoshop and now I don’t.
  • Even if I use a free drawing program, it might interfere will my ability to give some Patreon rewards.
  • I can’t spare the money to buy a monthly prescription for Photoshop.
  • I no longer have a day job and I’m using my free time to improve upon my skills. With the month I have in the bank, I’ll be able to spend roughly 8 months improving my skills, provided that no unexpected expenses come up.
  • I’m willing to eat less food and wake up early in the morning to get what I want.
  • I could really use some support through Patreon or Ko-fi or just having my art reach more people.

End up summary. Detailed information below:

As you may know, I mainly use Photoshop to create my artwork. I initially got Photoshop for free due to the school program that I was in. However, today Adobe finally caught up with me and is now keeping me from using Photoshop unless I use a 30-day trial or pay for it.

I thought I’d be able to get around this considering that my school gave me a redemption code for Photoshop roughly around the time I graduated. However, when I tried to redeem the redemption code today, it wouldn’t work. An Adobe support member told me to try again in 24 hours, but I have a feeling that it won’t work.

So here’s the deal; I can use another free software to continue making art (I’m thinking of using Medibang Paint Pro), but I’m not very familiar with other programs so it may effect the quality of my work. Also, I’m not sure if I will be able to offer all the Patreon rewards I currently have if I use another program. So that will be effected as well. I could just pay for Photoshop, but I want to avoid doing that for as long as possible since I am not in the financial position to afford monthly payments for Photoshop.

This leads me to something else I want to mention. Recently I’ve been let go from my day job (I was a temporary worker anyways, so I was expecting this to happen at some point). I didn’t consider this to be a huge problem because I planned on using this time off in order to improve upon my art skills. With the amount of money I have in the bank, I can afford to spend roughly 8 months increasing my talent before I had to find more work. I really need this time to focus on my skills, and I’m hoping that no unexpected expenses come up.

So knowing that, you can imagine why I’m not so quick to spend money on monthly payments for Photoshop any time soon. The more money I spend, the less time I’ll have to focus on my art and improve my skills. The less time I have, the less improvement I’ll make and the less likely it will be for me to land an art job or get enough people to think I’m worth supporting on Patreon.

I am making some life changes to combat this. I have to buy my own food, but I’m willing to spend less money on eating if it means I’ll have more time off. I also usually get up at around 9am - 11am, but I’m going to start getting up at 6am in order to have more time in the day to work on art and improving my skills. But I know all of this isn’t going to be enough.

If you can, please consider supporting me on Patreon or giving me a tip on Ko-fi, or even just sharing your art with others so I can get more recognition out there. Every little bit helps. It really does.
